The Jackman Humanities Institute (JHI), University of Toronto, held an online book launch and panel discussion of Premesh Lalu's Undoing Apartheid, on Tuesday, 14 March. The discussion included contributions from Melissa Levin (University of Toronto), Warren Crichlow (York University), John K. CALL FOR APPLICATIONSICAS:MP Autumn School 2023 ‘Decolonization/Decolonial: Thinking across Disciplines and Geo-Histories’11–21 September 2023The 2023 autumn school of the M.S. Merian – R. Tagore International Centre of Advanced Studies ‘Metamorphoses of the Political’ (ICAS:MP) offers broad-based theoretical training to doctoral researchers and enhances methodological competence. The need to decolonize knowledge is universally felt. However, what it means to decolonize thought is a matter of intense debate. In this autumn school, we discuss diverse ways in which scholars and activists have thought of this question – in different geo-historical regions of the world and across disciplines of study, thus bringing a comparative perspective to bear upon the issue of decolonization/decoloniality.The question at the heart of the school is how to move forward from the moment of a critique of Eurocentrism to a positive and substantial rethinking of the academy on a planet faced with climate and refugee crisis, pandemics, universal financialization, data extraction, resurgent nationalism and political authoritarianism. Debates from the Global South will play a central role in our deliberations.Resource persons represent various disciplinary and regional backgrounds. The Charlotte Maxeke-Mary Robinson Irish South Africa Research Chair launch, 14 March 2023 H.E. Fionnuala Gilsenan, Ambassador of Ireland to South Africa, and the Rector and Vice-Chancellor of the University of the Western Cape (UWC), Professor Tyrone Pretorius, are proud to announce the launch of UWC’s Charlotte Maxeke - Mary Robinson Research Chair at the Centre for Humanities Research.This Chair emerges out of a longstanding collaboration between the Centre for Humanities Research (CHR) at UWC and the Trinity Long Room Hub Arts & Humanities Research Institute (TLRH) at Trinity College Dublin that has focused on colonialism, partition, postcoloniality and race. Relationships and networks forged through these institutions’ fellowship programmes have laid the groundwork for today’s historic announcement. The Charlotte Maxeke-Mary Robinson Research Chair inaugurates, through the Humanities, a broader and reciprocal collaboration between Ireland and South Africa which engages our complex inheritance of colonialism, empire, partition and apartheid, and how to overcome this legacy. The CHR and TLRH’s work in aesthetics and politics has drawn attention across our social and institutional settings to the ways that cultural production can bring political thought, the arts, and research across disciplines into the public sphere. Call for Contributions: The South African Society for Research in Music (SASRIM) 2023 Conference Deadline: 14 April 2023The South African Society for Research in Music (SASRIM) invites contributions for its 2023 conference, hosted by the Centre for Humanities Research, University of the Western Cape.SASRIM welcomes contributions on a wide range of topics in music research, including those that explore disciplinary intersections, and the convergences and divergences between performance and/as research. Alongside this broad scope, we especially invite submissions that respond to the notion of sound and music as a problem space (Scott, 2004) of relationality and knowledge production, and how this manifests at the intersections of voice, technology, and the archive.
