Zine-making workshop: Something like an archive – Exploring memory through zine-making

‘Something like an archive - Exploring memory through zine-making’ is a one day public workshop at Iyatsiba Lab facilitated by visual artist and educator, Scott Eric Williams.

It is aimed at anyone from 14 to 30 years old who would like to explore the media of zine-making, which is a DIY method for assembling a publication. Basic materials will be supplied. Please bring a pair of scissors, some of your favourite art- making tools and a few photocopied images of objects, artefacts or family members that are near and dear to you. Participants are requested to wear comfortable clothing that allows for freedom of movement.

This workshop is a companion project to the group exhibition, Tales of History Retold, at Iyatsiba Gallery, which runs from 5 November (18h00 opening) until 28 November.

The project as a whole is organised under the auspices of the British Academy/NRF UK-SA Bilateral Chair in Digital Humanities.

Speaker BIO

Scott Eric Williams is a visual arts practitioner from Cape Town, South Africa. He creates his art, predominantly, with textile media, wheatpastes and zines to reflect on questions related to rogue urbanisms, labour, the archive, and non-formal education. Williams holds an MAVS (Cum laude) from the University of Stellenbosch and contributes to the visual arts landscape as a visual artist, youth educator, curator, writer and scholar. He is a founding member of the collective, Burning Museum, and is currently the Art Education Lead at Lalela Projects.
