New Archival Visions at UWC Research Grants and Fellowships (2025/6): Deadline 26 September 2025

The New Archival Visions (NAV) programme at the Centre for Humanities Research (CHR), University of the Western Cape (UWC), is offering fellowships for the remainder of 2025. Funding support comes from the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET).

Applications are open for students and postdoctoral candidates for these grant and fellowship opportunities to promote new research that is oriented towards the UWC archives. These archives include the UWC-Robben Island Museum-Mayibuye Archives, along with specialized collections focused on research, activism, multimedia, and art. These collections encompass histories of the liberation struggle and various forms of activism and art in southern Africa. The NAV initiative encourages diverse explorations of the histories, objects, and media within these collections, resulting in research papers, publications, theses, performances, films, and curated works. Successful applicants will become fellows at the CHR and participate in its programmes. Information about collections can be found at https://mayibuyearchives.org/ or through email inquiry to vlayne@uwc.ac.za.

The fellowship categories include Student Curatorial Fellowships and Postdoctoral Fellowships. Applications should be addressed to the New Archival Visions fellowship selection committee, which comprises representatives from the New Archival Visions research project, the CHR, and the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at UWC. Decisions of the committee are final. In certain circumstances, the committee may elect to interview suitable candidates.
