Jeaneth Ngwenya

Honours Fellow, UK-RSA Bilateral Digital Humanities Chair in culture and technics

Jeaneth Ngwenya is an Honours student at the University of the Western Cape and a UK-SA Bilateral Digital humanities chair in culture and technics Fellow at the Centre for Humanities. Jeaneth is currently doing a research study of Home Language Learning in South African Schools located in Johannesburg. This is a rare study in the field of History. This study looks at the learning of Indigenous languages as a form of decolonisation in South African Education, specifically looking at the representations of Xitsonga Home Language. As it is a common saying that a language carries the culture and daily life experiences of the people who speak that language, Jeaneth’s research focuses on the representations of Xitsonga Culture in the classrooms and learning materials. It is also concerned about the representation history of the Vatsonga people. Jeaneth believes that the Xitsonga subject should have a room for teaching learners about their own history as it is marginalized in History textbooks.
