Ava van Huyssteen is a PhD student and fellow under the UK-SA Bilateral Digital humanities chair in culture and technics. She has a disciplinary background in social anthropology and sociology and holds a Master’s degree in public sociology and social anthropology from Stellenbosch University.

Ava has been engaging with the implications of human interaction with digital technology throughout her academic career. This started with her honours research on the social significance of internet memes. It then continued with her master’s research on the impact of generative AI on the teaching, learning, and assessment practices of social science lecturers. She is committed to engaging with questions of the overlap of humans, technology, and modern culture. For her PhD, she is focusing, among other things, on the influence of artificial intelligence on aspects of human social and cultural life.
