Centre for Humanities Research: Celebrating milestones

Centre for Humanities Research: Celebrating milestones

With the recent launch of the next phase of the CHR’s DSTI-NRF Flagship in the Humanities at its new Greatmore facility, we would like to thank our partners, alumni and academic cohorts for bringing the centre to this next phase of its development. Between 2006 and 2024 the CHR has achieved several milestones:
            • Approximately 300 graduates at Masters and Doctoral level with a 98% placement rate at universities, research institutes, and public institutions in South Africa and internationally.
            • Approximately 30 monographs, edited volumes, and journal special issues
            • Over 250 peer-reviewed research articles and chapters
            • 23 International Partnerships, resulting in fourteen years of Winter Schools supporting approximately 1200 students and faculty from across the world.
            • Hosted more than 40 prominent international scholars and artists
            • Hosted 3 Research chairs.

            Highlights:

            • In 2017 the CHR hosted the annual Consortium of Humanities Centres and Institutes (CHCI) annual meeting with 400 directors of centres and institutes from across the world.
            • Established a dedicated facility for humanities collaborations that also accommodates its arts initiatives in kinetic objects, documentary film, sound inquiries and New Archival Visions.
            • Extending research platforms on aesthetics and politics, the becoming technical of the Human, and Communicating the Humanities, through the establishment of an inquiry on New Ecologies of the Subject.
            • Facilitated the recruitment of 85 youth from our partners in the rural community of Barrydale into Higher Education Institutions.
            • Created opportunities for youth mobility that breaks up the geographies of apartheid.
            • Facilitated University wide collaborations across the arts and sciences with national, continental and international partners.
