The CHR, in collaboration with the Ruth J. Simmons Center for the Study of Slavery & Justice at Brown University, the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, and Iziko Museums of South Africa, will be hosting in Slavery’s Wake: making Black Freedom in the World, on 27 May 2026.Date: Thursday 27 May 2026Venue: Iyatsiba Lab, 66 Greatmore St, Woodstock, Cape TownTime: 9:00am - 5:00pm (with an evening reception)Registration: luma.com/axm54jp6 The history and legacies of slavery and the concept and meanings of freedom, with their attendant questions of the forms and understandings of labour, identity, and race, and the trickery of control societies, have been central questions in the ongoing work of the Centre for Humanities Research. The work of the Global Curatorial Project, through its Unfinished Conversations series and its traveling exhibition, In Slavery’s Wake, has been staging this question in novel ways. In this workshop, we take our cue from In Slavery’s Wake in order to examine the legacies of slavery and control in the Cape, with a particular emphasis on the freedoms shaped and invented while in the hold of these systems, while creating space for freedom, for “what is most human in [humankind]” (Fanon, BSWM). Through a series of presentations and conversations, the workshop will explore questions of identity, labour, control, and the enduring legacy of slavery in the Cape, as well as the ongoing work of undoing its scripts. ... The CHR is inviting applications from candidates seeking grantholder endorsement for DSTI-NRF Master’s and Doctoral Student Funding for the academic year 2027. Successful applicants will work alongside a team of leading researchers at the CHR under either the UK-SA Bilateral Chair in Culture and Technics, or the SARChI Chair in Visual History and Theory.Internal Deadline: Monday 1 June 2026Please note: this is a two-stage application process. Together/Apart, an exhibition about the Irish anti-apartheid struggle, opened on 14 May at The Little Museum of Dublin.This exhibition salutes the thousands of ordinary Irish people who joined a mass movement of solidarity against apartheid in South Africa, and invites us to consider the deeper resonances of solidarity that link the people of Ireland and South Africa.In attendance at the opening were members of the famous 1980s Dunnes Stores strikes (Theresa Mooney, Liz Deasy, Sabina Higgins, Cathryn O'Reilly, Sandra Griffin, and Vonnie Munroe) who are pictured here with the curators, Premesh Lalu (left) and Daryl Hendley Rooney (right), and the former Irish President, Michael D.
