The South-South Solidarity and Resistance to Imperialism, International Conference, has issued a Call for Papers. DEADLINE: 20 April 2026. Organized by the Ibrahim Abu-Lughod Institute of International Studies at Birzeit University, and Al Shabaka: The Palestinian Policy Network, this conference addresses a broad and interdisciplinary audience, including academic researchers, political organizers, practitioners, civil society organizations, and representatives of progressive movements. Its distinctive contribution lies in centering transnational solidarities emerging from the Global South and transhemispheric and diasporic communities, positioning these formations not as peripheral to global politics but as generative sites of theory, strategy, and imagination. Please join us for the next Humanities in Session: Conversations, Thoughts, Experiments seminar, on Thursday 9 April. This session is titled, ‘Queerness, Blackness and the Postcolony’ and will be led by Lwando Scott. In a meditation on the relationship between queer aesthetics and politics, Scott inquires, what happens when 'queerness', 'blackness', and 'performance' come into view? What does the exploration of queerness in popular culture give us? While cognisant of the 'metrocentric' Global North characterisation of LGBTI identities, Scott argues that in the postcolony these urban queer formations articulate a time that is 'not yet here' (Muñoz, 2009), they pronounce a queer African futurity that is beyond the tired-yet-ubiquitous assertion that queerness is 'unAfrican.' We are pleased to announce the opening of Facts and Fabulations at the Iyatsiba Lab on Thursday 9 April. Facts and Fabulations is composed largely of archival material from the University of the Western Cape–Robben Island Museum–Mayibuye Archives. Seven images appear on the walls, whose dimensions are expanded through the recorded fabulations of UWC students in response to them. Augmented Reality installations that open into related archival materials also expand the dimensions. Art effects: sensory education in uncertain times, by Premesh LaluDate: Tuesday 31 March 2026Venue: Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB)Main Campus EtterbeekTime: 18:00 – 20:00 (GMT+1) Premesh Lalu will be delivering a lecture, ‘Art effects: sensory education in uncertain times’, at Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) on Tuesday 31 March 2026, as part of the Ties That Bind Us series and the Pauwels Academy of Critical Thinking.This lecture revisits conversations with VUB Vice Chancellor, Caroline Pauwels on the enduring aftermaths of the global solidarity movement against apartheid during her visit to the University of the Western Cape (UWC) in 2018. Those exchanges resonate today through an extraordinary arts intervention on climate change enacted with a herd of life-size animal puppets marching from Kinshasa to the Arctic Circle. Created by the Ukwanda Puppet and Design Art Collective in UWC’s Centre for Humanities Research, for Nisar Zouabi and David Lan’s Walk Production, The Herds compels us to rethink solidarity in our era.
