The CHR will be hosting its annual International Workshop in Visual History & Theory at Iyatsiba Lab on 16-17 October 2026, in partnership with Université-Paris-8, on the theme of 'Looking Together.' Migration, solidarity and mobility across time and space are key themes. This workshop includes a series of panels and lectures, and coincides with the launch of an exhibition, Makuapis, on Thursday 15 October at Iyatsiba Lab.
Synopsis:
Makuapis is a vitrine open to the street. On its glass, George Mahashe places a Kongo cosmogram, the yowa: a cross inside a circle, the path that runs through the living and the dead. The Cape Town sun pushes its shadow into the room and onto a wall of constellations. The image is never fixed. It is remade each day by the light of this place.
Mahashe works with the Khelobedu language, dreams and divination alongside photographic and optical tools, without translating one into the other. In SETTLED, Ange-Frederic Koffi calls this chthono-techne: a practice in which the soil, light and cosmology of a place become part of how the work is made. In Makuapis, the sun and the ancestors take part in making the image.
SETTLED was first shown at La Filature in Mulhouse, as part of Sedimentation(s), the 7th Biennale de la Photographie de Mulhouse (16 May – 12 July 2026). Makuapis brings part of it back to the light that Mahashe’s work comes from. The opening on Thursday 15 October marks the first launch of the book, alongside the International Workshop Looking Together / Regarder Ensemble.
