The Artists Forum, convened at the Centre for Humanities Research, emerges out a longstanding conversation between artists and academics working in and through the CHR. The Forum’s objective has been to connect scholarly exploration with the CHR’s Artist in Residency programme, and to bring artists and humanistic study into a more intimate adjacency.

In this engagement, ‘Future Forms’, Kim Gurney will share some findings from her multi-city research on independent art spaces in Africa, focusing upon their organisational models.

During her research for Platform/ Plotform, Kim visited five emblematic ‘offspaces’, running for a decade or more, to find out their secret sauce. By making correlations between artistic strategies and everyday urban practices, Kim surfaces key operating principles held in common. These collectively forged pathways, or ‘panya routes’, offer a novel set of tactics for managing uncertainty and self-assembling differently configured futures. In short, for doing things with art.
