The Centre for Humanities Research at the University of the Western Cape adds its voice to many others who are deeply concerned about the cancellation of Gabrielle Goliath’s Elegy that was officially selected for the South African Pavilion at the Venice Biennale of 2026. Elegy engages deeply and poetically with histories of gender-based violence against women, children and marginalised subjects. It goes back as far as the Nama and Herero genocides in Namibia up to recent killings in Gaza, as well as the chronic and horrific levels of ongoing daily violence in South Africa. Acts of repair in the wake of violence take sustained work across multiple generations. Goliath’s Elegy is widely acknowledged as opening an important space of mourning and participation that refuses spectacle and allows for shared grief and participation to begin. It is against violence.The last-minute cancellation of Goliath’s selected work by the Minister for Sports, Art and Culture is an arbitrary act that, whatever its motivations, places the freedom of artistic expression in jeopardy. The decision is itself a form of patriarchal violence against artists and curators working in the wake of its very harm. The CHR calls on the President’s Office to rescind this highly controversial decision that has placed South Africa in a very negative, even philistine, light in terms of the international attention around the Biennale. Every Artist Must Take Sides – Resonanzen von Eslanda und Paul Robeson14.11.2025 – 25.1.2026Akademie der Künste, HanseatenwegLeila Bencharnia is a composer, sound and textile researcher, and storyteller. Her sound installation “Purple Lipstick” looks at schools, Indigenous knowledge systems, and acoustic practices as ways to understand how oppression accumulates in daily life, and how communities work to break its repeating cycles. Using archival recordings and documents, the project follows feminist pedagogical tools - oral, written, and embodied - shaped during and after apartheid. Exhibition, 'Every Artist Must Take Sides – Resonances of Eslanda and Paul Robeson' at the Akademie Der Kunste, Berlin in cooperation with the Centre for Humanities Research, 14 November 2025 to 25 January 2026.‘Every Artist Must Take Sides – Resonances of Eslanda and Paul Robeson’, launched on 14 November 2025 at the Akademie der Künste (ADK). The Paul Robeson Archive was founded 60 years ago at the former Akademie der Künste (East) in Berlin. The extensive collection provides an insight into the life and work of Paul Robeson – African-American singer, actor, lawyer and activist – and that of the author, anthropologist, UN correspondent, artist manager and political intellectual Eslanda Goode Robeson. The couple linked the anti-racist struggle in the USA with anti-colonial movements in Africa, Asia and the Caribbean, international workers’ struggles in the spirit of socialist internationalism, and anti-fascist freedom struggles in Europe – such as the Spanish Civil War. The title of the exhibition refers to the latter: a quote from Paul Robeson’s speech at the Royal Albert Hall in 1937 in solidarity with the International Brigades, in which he called for a clear stance against fascism.The artistic works focus on the actualisation of these resistant and relational practices, the role of voice, sound and body, and the questioning of geopolitical constellations between anti-colonial liberation movements and the Cold War.
