Please join us on Thursday 15 October at Iyatsiba Lab, for the next Humanities in Session Seminar, 'Facing the Heat in South Africa', with Vishwas Satgar, who will be in conversation with Lee Walters. Date: Thursday 15 October 2026Times: 13:00pm-15:00pm Venue: Iyatsiba Lab, Woodstock, Cape Town. Synopsis: Southern Africa is heating at twice the global average. With the failure of the UN multi-lateral process to rapidly phase out fossil fuels, the world has lost the opportunity to prevent a 1.5°C overshoot. South Africa and the region has to brace for 3°C. The country is completely unprepared for this post-normal reality. Through photography, this book documents ten years of unfolding climate shocks, injustice and resistance post a 1°C overshoot at a global level. It gives powerful insights into the complexity of climate extremes and how the meaning of weather has changed. As a photographic archive it also provides forensic evidence for how an uncaring and criminalised political leadership, addicted to fossil fuels, is force marching the country into climate disaster. South Africa has used coal for more than a hundred years, has a carbon-intensive economy and is addicted to fossil fuel. It does not have a future if it continues down this path. This book echoes the warnings of climate science but also amplifies the case for climate justice solutions to secure a livable, just and democratic future for all.For more information and RSVP details: ...

Retheorising the University: Sites of Critique: 2nd and 3rd July 2026 (few images)Co-convened by the CHR and the Wallerstein Institute for World Futures, under the auspices of the @chcinetwork Consortium of Humanities Centres and Institutes (CHCI)’s Critical Humanities Spaces Network.@wallersteinkatharine OverviewThis workshop sought to interrogate the current condition of the university in conversation with earlier histories and critiques of the university and with recent theorizations of institutionality. It is vital to understand both the institutional limits and the potentialities of the university, given the new authoritarianism’s fixation on dismantling it alongside other public goods. Participants were invited to think collectively about the past, present, and futures of the university, understood in its local and global institutional logics and histories. We looked at colonial histories, the debates between “useful” and “useless knowledge” at the heart of that project, and the ramifications of that debate today. #university #chr #humanities #research #southafrica ...

Please join us on Thursday 3 September at Iyatsiba Lab, for the next Humanities in Session: Archive Lab, HOME: IE by Naoya Yoshikawa. .Date: Thursday 3 SeptemberTimes: 13:00pm-15:00pm Venue: Iyatsiba Lab, Woodstock, Cape Town. Synopsis: In Japanese, the word ie means both house and home, reflecting the deep relationship between place, family and memory. Traditionally, the land, the house and the family are understood as inseparable, shaped by rituals that honour both ancestors and the spirit of the place. This series began after photographer Naoya Yoshikawa’s family home in Nara was sold in 2019. Built by his father in 1964, it had been the centre of family life for more than five decades. Although the house still stands, it no longer belongs to his family, prompting the artist to reflect on what “home” truly means. Photographed in and around Nara, the images explore memory, loss and belonging. Familiar landscapes, once taken for granted, become repositories of personal history, while the experience of the COVID-19 pandemic further deepened Yoshikawa’s understanding of home as both a physical place and an emotional state. HOME: IE is a quiet meditation on family, impermanence and the universal search for belonging. This talk is presented as part of NAV’s ongoing Archive Lab series, which gathers scholars, students, artists and archivists to think together about archival practice, research methods and the activation of research collections. Archive Lab is part of the Humanities in Session series presented by the Centre for Humanities Research at UWC.This discussion is presented as part of NAV’s ongoing Archive Lab series, which gathers scholars, students, artists and archivists to think together about the activation of research collections.
