Retheorising the University: Sites of Critique: 2nd and 3rd July 2026 (few images)Co-convened by the CHR and the Wallerstein Institute for World Futures, under the auspices of the @chcinetwork Consortium of Humanities Centres and Institutes (CHCI)’s Critical Humanities Spaces Network.@wallersteinkatharine OverviewThis workshop sought to interrogate the current condition of the university in conversation with earlier histories and critiques of the university and with recent theorizations of institutionality. It is vital to understand both the institutional limits and the potentialities of the university, given the new authoritarianism’s fixation on dismantling it alongside other public goods. Participants were invited to think collectively about the past, present, and futures of the university, understood in its local and global institutional logics and histories. We looked at colonial histories, the debates between “useful” and “useless knowledge” at the heart of that project, and the ramifications of that debate today. #university #chr #humanities #research #southafrica ...

Please join us on Thursday 3 September at Iyatsiba Lab, for the next Humanities in Session: Archive Lab, HOME: IE by Naoya Yoshikawa. .Date: Thursday 3 SeptemberTimes: 13:00pm-15:00pm Venue: Iyatsiba Lab, Woodstock, Cape Town. Synopsis: In Japanese, the word ie means both house and home, reflecting the deep relationship between place, family and memory. Traditionally, the land, the house and the family are understood as inseparable, shaped by rituals that honour both ancestors and the spirit of the place. This series began after photographer Naoya Yoshikawa’s family home in Nara was sold in 2019. Built by his father in 1964, it had been the centre of family life for more than five decades. Although the house still stands, it no longer belongs to his family, prompting the artist to reflect on what “home” truly means. Photographed in and around Nara, the images explore memory, loss and belonging. Familiar landscapes, once taken for granted, become repositories of personal history, while the experience of the COVID-19 pandemic further deepened Yoshikawa’s understanding of home as both a physical place and an emotional state. HOME: IE is a quiet meditation on family, impermanence and the universal search for belonging.This talk is presented as part of NAV’s ongoing Archive Lab series, which gathers scholars, students, artists and archivists to think together about archival practice, research methods and the activation of research collections. It is with great sadness that we share a tribute to Tiisetso Dladla who, as many of you will know, passed away in Johannesburg on 11 August 2026. Tiisetso was a doctoral fellow of the New Archival Visions (NAV) at the Centre for Humanities Research, with her PhD registered in the Department of Historical Studies.
