PhD Fellow, UK-RSA Bilateral Digital Humanities Chair in culture and technics

Aneesah Hoosain is a PhD Student at the University of the Western Cape’s Anthropology Department, a UK-RSA Bilateral Digital Humanities Chair in culture and technics fellow, and a member of the Social Science Research Council. She is interested in various anthropological fields including digital, queer, and economic. Her master’s research, titled Outside Gaymers: Queerness, and Race in Online Gaming Culture in South Africa, focused on embodiment within virtual worlds and video games; particularly how queer people make use of these spaces as a means to navigate and play with gender. Her PhD intends to continue her work on video games, however with the focus shifting towards video games produced within the African continent. She intends to look at how video games exist as both works of art and forms of technology and the decolonial potential which they have.
