Souleymane Bachir Diagne is Professor in the Department of French and Romance Philology and the Department of Philosophy at Columbia University, New York. His field of research includes history of logic, history of philosophy, Islamic philosophy, African philosophy and literature. His latest book, Bergson postcolonial.L’élan vital dans la pensée de Léopold Sédar Senghor et de Mohamed Iqbal (Paris, Editions du CNRS, 2011) was awarded the Dagnan-Bouveret prize by the French Academy of Moral and Political Sciences for 2011. As a guest of the CHR, Professor Diagne presented a widely acclaimed lecture on “Negritude, Postcoloniality and the Universal” (22 May 2014), followed by discussions of his book on Senghor and Bergson. This text formed the core of the CHR’s reading programme in the first part of 2014.
