Adopted on 26 June 1955 by the Congress of the People at Kliptown, The Freedom Charter outlined a vision for a united, non-racial and democratic South Africa and embodied the hopes and aspirations of the oppressed in apartheid South Africa. Many of the demands of the Freedom Charter were later incorporated into the South African Constitution, adopted in 1996 after the first democratic elections.
