In 1986, coinciding with the 100th anniversary of International Workers Day, the Congress of South African Workers (COSATU) initiated a campaign to have May Day officially recognised. The campaign sparked huge worker and student stayaways that continued for the next few years. May Day was recognised as a public holiday in 1990.
