A collaborative performance at the Factory of the Arts, Lydia Williams Memorial Hall, 128 Chapel Street, Woodstock at 7pm on Tuesday 29 November.

The Factory of the Arts presents From Mozambique to the Cape: Performance Encounters in Music, Masks, Movement, Poetry and Painting

Participating artists include dance group, Massacre de Mueda which performs dances from northern Mozambique – including traditional mapiko masquerading – connecting them in song and choreography to histories of slavery, liberation and post-colonialism. Performers from Massacre de Mueda are Atanásio Nhussi, percussionist, singer, main dancer and choreographer; Valério Mwale, percussionist, main singer, choir and choreographer; Moisés Bilali, dancer, percussionist and singer, Maurício Nangonga: dancer, percussionist, singer and choreographer and Constantino Ntumissana, dancer, singer and choir.

 

Performers from the Cape include, Dathini Mzayiya, CHR artist in residence, visual and sound artist; Anele Kose, poet; Noma Krestu, singer and Lwanda, rapper and poet; actors Phumeza Rashe Matoti and Anele Matoti and saxophonist Hlubi Vakalisa.

Artistic direction by Itumeleng Wa Lehulere, convener and artistic director of the Factory of the Arts.

Massacre de Mueda’s visit to and performances in South Africa is supported by an ANT Funding Grant from Pro Helvetia Johannesburg financed by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC).

The Factory of the Arts is a project of the Centre for Humanities Research at the University of the Western Cape.
