Supervised by Professor Suren Pillay, Senior Researcher at the CHR, Abdsalam Alahwal graduated with a Ph.D in Political Science with the title ‘Understanding the Democratisation Process in the Middle East and North Africa after the ‘Arab Spring’: the Case of Libya.
The abstract for the dissertation reads as follows:
This thesis explores the prospects of democratization in one of the countries that underwent dramatic changes during the Arab Spring. Through extensive interviews with students and lecturers at three universities in the major regions of Libya- Tripoli, Benghazi and Sabha, the thesis illuminates how some Libyan’s understand the major challenges they currently face politically. The thesis then offers an innovative theorization of how democratization in Libya would have to contend with the region’s history, and particular forms of cultural and religious practices, if it is to transcend its current fragmentation and drift toward a renewed form of authoritarian and militarized rule.
The CHR congratulates both Professor Suren Pillay and Dr. Alahwal on this achievement.
